With much engagement and even more enthusiasm the doctoral students and researchers of the LMU BioCenter both organized and executed the very first Open Doors Day (Tag der offenen Tür). The over 500 visitors were impressed and responded with high praise for the event. The combination of engaging and easy to understand lectures, interactive information stands about the various research areas and very well visited theme labs with opportunities to experiment and gain insight, served to impress all guests.

In particular the nearly 350 students from various secondary schools (Gymnasien) from both near and far acquired a greater zeal for biology. The opportunities to use microscopes, pipette on one’s own and examine live model organisms brought the level of interest to an unexpected height. The youngest researchers came from the elementary school in Martinsried, whose students from the second and fourth grades could also experiment at various stations in a specially devised kids’ lab.

Secondary school graduates (AbiturientInnen) could inform themselves directly by the biology studies coordination office about the various options available in a biology course of study at the university. The organization team, consisting of members from the deanery, the biology studies coordination office (Studiengangskoordination Biologie), Amgen Scholars Programme and the graduate schools of Life Science Munich (LSM) and Systemic Neurosciences (GSN), was very happy to achieve such a positive balance. Special thanks goes to the doctoral students of the LSM and GSN, who tirelessly applied themselves to the coordination and conception of the theme labs, the kid’s lab and the information stands, without your help the day would not have been possible! We would also like to say thank you to the speakers, especially for your efforts to present non-scientists without any research background the possibility to gain insight into each research field. Our connection to the Martinsried/Planegg community was given a voice through the second mayor, Mr. Peter Heizer, who generously together with the decan, Prof. Parniske, inaugurated the event.
