Intrinsic Disorder in Pathogen Effectors: Protein Flexibility as an Evolutionary Hallmark in a Molecular Arms Race
Macarena Marín, Vladimir N. Uversky and Thomas Ott
A central paradigm of structural biology is that protein function depends on a fixed three-dimensional structure. This has been defied by the discovery of intrinsically disordered proteins, which lack a defined structure. Based on in silico proteome-wide surveys we discuss how disorder may contribute to function and evolution of effectors in the molecular arms race between hosts and pathogens.
